The Chicken Schnitzel Test

The Chicken Schnitzel Test

A common question I hear asked in different leadership forums is how do you choose the team you surround yourself with?

For me it comes down to whether or not I would like to enjoy a schnitzel dinner with them. Well of course there is more to it, but the answer to that question plays a really significant role in my decision.

Every family has their trademark meal when hosting guests for dinner. In our family it’s hand made chicken schnitzel, vegetables and a whole heap of gravy. It is the most requested choice when an invitation to dinner is extended to family and friends.

And it’s always amazing – my wife is an incredible cook.

But it is the people who come, the discussion around the table and the way that we all get in and clean up afterwards together that I love. It is the fact that we just really love spending time together and enjoy each other’s company.

So it has become my schnitzel test. Do I see myself sitting around our table and enjoying a chicken schnitzel with this person? Not just now, but years into the future.

If the answer is yes then it tells me that I foresee a relationship that is strong and healthy, and someone who will roll up their sleeves and wash the dishes with me.
